Lord Mahavira, the last Jain Tirthankar, was born in Kshatriyakund (Shwetambar belief; Vaishali according to Digambar) some 2600 ago as a prince in a royal family. He lived like a prince, though detached, till his age 28. He wanted renunciation from mundane world after death of his parents King Siddharth and Queen Trishala. He stayed in home for further two years after the request of his elder brother Nandivardhan.
He approached his elder brother to permit him for Deeksha. He initiated on Vaisakh Shukla Dasami at the age of 30 and took five vows. Deeksha Kalyanak (Initiation day) of Lord Mahavira is today, Vaisakh Shukla Dasami, 1st may this year.
He attained omniscience after more than twelve years of austerity and penance and preached Jainism.
